There For a Reason / w4m / Atlanta (MARTA Five Points Station)
Through the stopping and the going of the train, you held your bike like a bride, gently but everyone knew it belonged to you. Would you be that gentle with a lover, a thing not as stable as two wheels getting you around town? If we were a couple, would you always have your hand around my waist, just resting it there? I ask because that’s what I want, just a hand there, reminding me that I am not that girl sitting by the train’s door tapping her poor footwear choice over there or that guy texting on his phone across from her. I am not alone.
You had holes in your ears. They were big and intentional but empty. I could see through you. The nauseating cream of the train’s plastic blinked back at me. Those holes in your ears were there for a reason, stranger. At some point, you thought they were a good idea. Maybe you still think they’re a good idea but needed a break from the weight. If that’s the case, I know what that feels like. But I could use a break from the recent weightlessness. Come find me. Just slip your hand around my waist, like we’re about to dance right there. I will let you.
